Advancing Science, Technology and Innovation for Africa’s Development

Building Africa’s Capacity Through Knowledge, Innovation and Collaboration

The Nelson Mandela Institution for Knowledge Building and the Advancement of Science and Technology in Sub-Saharan Africa is a nonprofit organization established to strengthen science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, research and innovation across Africa.

NMI works with governments, academic institutions, development partners, the private sector and other stakeholders to support institutions and initiatives that develop highly skilled professionals, promote research and encourage practical solutions to Africa’s development needs.

Through its programmes, networks and partnerships, NMI contributes to stronger education systems, improved research capacity and sustainable development across the continent.

Programmes and Initiatives

NMI supports programmes and institutions that promote advanced education, professional development, research collaboration and knowledge exchange.

our approach

A Long-Term, Systems-Oriented Approach to Development

NMI’s approach is built on a long-term, systems-oriented vision of development. We recognise that Africa’s development challenges cannot be addressed through isolated interventions. Sustainable progress requires strong institutions, skilled professionals, effective partnerships and access to high-quality education and research.

NMI therefore brings together governments, universities, research institutions, development organisations and private-sector partners to develop initiatives that respond to national and regional priorities.

Our work focuses on strengthening institutions and creating opportunities for African professionals to develop, apply and share the knowledge required to drive meaningful change.
